Most expensive repairs start as cheap maintenance that got skipped. Here's a schedule that's easy to follow. Your owner's manual always wins if it says otherwise.
Every 3,000–7,500 miles
- Oil and filter change
- Tire rotation and pressure check
- Quick look at wipers, lights and fluid levels
Every 15,000–30,000 miles
- Engine and cabin air filters
- Brake inspection — pads, rotors and fluid
- Alignment check, especially after hitting potholes
Every 30,000–60,000 miles
- Coolant service
- Transmission service
- Battery test (do it before extreme heat or cold)
Every year
- Any state-required inspection
- A good wash underneath if your roads are salted in winter
